Bible in a Year Devotions

This is going to be my attempt at writing devotions for reading through the bible in a year. I hope you will bear with me and will let me know if you find these posts beneficial.

Genesis 1-3

In the beginning God…

Ex nihilo – out of nothing. In the beginning there was nothing but God. He even created time so that we could have a beginning. God is outside of all His creation. Time began in the beginning when God created. There is nothing He did not create. He created the physical and the spiritual, the visible and the invisible, from the largest creature to the microscopic, God created with the word from His mouth.

“And God said;” When God speaks, stuff happens. God created and saw that it was very good.

Then God created man and woman. He created them in His image. He created them for a relationship with Him. But the serpent came along and distorted the word of God. God spoke and it was very good. The serpent spoke lies that lead to death. The man and woman chose to listen to the lies instead of the truth of God. They chose to listen to what they wanted to hear instead of what they needed to hear.

We do the same thing. We want to pick and choose what we listen to from the bible. We know there are things that we should not do, but we make excuses. We wonder why we face the consequences for our actions. We seem surprised that drugs, tobacco, and alcohol shorten our expected lifespan and cause disease. We seem surprised that as premarital sex increases, not only do unplanned pregnancies and disease spread, but divorce increases. We seem surprised that as the teaching of the Word of God and prayer was removed from our schools violence increases.

God warns us. When God speaks He speaks truth. As you read the Bible over the coming year, I encourage you to claim God’s promises and heed his warnings. I hope you will learn from your journey though the Word of God. Remember; when God speaks stuff happens.
